With every ruler, there was competition. Every time a king died there was question as to if his son would rule of is a cousin would rule. Sometimes a distant relative would lay his claim to the throne, and he might not even have a very strong claim.

Achaemenes of Anshan was the first king of Persia, but Persia was still under control of Media. then came Teipes of Anshan and then a joint rule between Cyrus I of Anshan and Ariaramnes of Persia. Ariaramnes' son died so Cyrus' Cambyses I ruled alone. He had a son called Cyrus II, who was later to take back Persia from the Medes and build the greatest empire ever seen. then when Cyrus II died, his eldest son Cambyses II took his place as boy king.Then Darius I, a descendant of Ariaramnes claimed the throne when Cambyses died. Then came Xerxes I, Artaxerses I, Darius II, Artaxerxes II, Artaxerxes III, Artaxerxes IV, and lastly Darius III, the last king before Persia fell to Alexander the Great.
